Samia Umeris-Teacher Librarian
How long have you been at AME:I have been at AME since January, 2012.
When asked to sum up my job:
In my role as Teacher Librarian I promote reading, read aloud literature, do book exchanges, recommend great books to students and organize special events like author visits and fun literacy events like DEAR DAY , Reading with the Rockets and READ 2015 PJ DAY. I plan and teach collaborative units with teachers, and teach important information literacy skills. I support the staff in the area of technology and provide enrichment for students through a variety of opportunities through the library.
What you like best about AME:
I enjoy the variety in my role at the school and how I get to work with all the teachers and students through the library. I also get to know almost 500 names! This makes my job very unique. I am amazed at all the opportunities for learning, leadership, and clubs for students at AME. This makes our school a fun place to be! I also love that all of my own children will go to this great school and I will get to see them in the library! I think I have the best job in the world!
What are your goals for your role in the school:
My goals are to foster a love for reading and learning in all of our students!
Something interesting about you people might not know:
I grew up in a small town in Southern Alberta where the population was 272. It is a farming community with few amenities. Growing up we entertained ourselves in interesting ways such as: making forts in old buildings, making water and mud slides in ditches, sledding down sugar beet piles and making massive leaf piles to jump into at the park! There were few organized activities for children. How things have changed!
Favourite Children's Books When You Were A Kid: I read a lot of Dr.Seuss, Disney Books, Nancy Drew and I remember loving to snuggle up with the Little House on the Prairie books. My Mom read to me every night before tucking me into bed. I do the same thing now with my own children.
Favourite authors for children today:Phoebe Gilman, Mo Willems, Emily Gravett, Eric Walters, Deborah Ellis, I could go on and on...
Favourite authors today for adults:Wally Lamb and Emily Giffin
